Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide is commonly sold under the brand name Mounjaro.
Tirzepatide is a novel medication used for the management of type 2 diabetes. It is a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, meaning it mimics the action of two incretin hormones: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). This dual action enhances glucose control and promotes weight loss. Tirzepatide stimulates insulin secretion in response to elevated blood glucose levels, inhibits glucagon release, slows gastric emptying, and enhances satiety. By activating both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, it provides a more comprehensive approach to glycemic control compared to traditional GLP-1 receptor agonists.Tablets & Capsules

Directions
The recommended starting dose of tirzepatide is typically 2.5 mg once weekly. The dose may be increased based on individual response and tolerance, up to a maximum of 15 mg once weekly. Tirzepatide is administered as a subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It can be taken with or without food. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.
Special Precautions
- Pancreatitis Risk: There have been reports of pancreatitis in patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonists. Monitor for symptoms such as severe abdominal pain.
- Renal Impairment: Use caution in patients with renal impairment; monitor kidney function regularly.
- Thyroid Tumors: Tirzepatide has been associated with thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies. It is not recommended for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a healthcare provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the safety of tirzepatide during these periods has not been fully established.
- Allergic Reactions: Be aware of potential allergic reactions, including skin rashes or swelling.
