Semaglutide
Semaglutide is commonly sold under brand names such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus.
Semaglutide is a medication used primarily for the management of type 2 diabetes and for chronic weight management in adults with obesity. It is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist that mimics the effects of incretin hormones, which play a key role in glucose metabolism. Semaglutide enhances insulin secretion in response to elevated blood glucose levels, inhibits glucagon release, slows gastric emptying, and increases feelings of fullness, leading to improved glycemic control and weight loss.Tablets & Capsules

Directions
For Type 2 Diabetes, the starting dose is typically 0.25 mg once weekly for the first four weeks. This may be increased to 0.5 mg once weekly, and then further increased to a maximum of 1 mg or higher based on individual needs.
For Chronic Weight Management (Wegovy formulation), the starting dose is 0.25 mg once weekly for the first month, increasing to 0.5 mg, then to 1 mg, and finally up to 2.4 mg once weekly based on tolerance and response. Semaglutide is administered as a subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It can be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
- Pancreatitis Risk: There have been reports of pancreatitis associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists. Patients should be monitored for symptoms such as severe abdominal pain.
- Renal Impairment: Use caution in patients with renal impairment; monitor kidney function regularly.
- Thyroid Tumors: Semaglutide has been associated with an increased risk of thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies. It is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a healthcare provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the safety of semaglutide during these periods has not been fully established.
- Allergic Reactions: Be aware of potential allergic reactions, including skin rashes or swelling.
