Dulaglutide

Dulaglutide is commonly sold under the brand name Trulicity.
Dulaglutide is a medication used for the management of type 2 diabetes. It is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist that helps lower blood sugar levels and supports weight loss. Dulaglutide is administered via subcutaneous injection and is designed to improve glycemic control when used alongside diet and exercise. Dulaglutide mimics the action of the incretin hormone GLP-1, which increases insulin secretion in response to meals, decreases glucagon release, slows gastric emptying, and enhances feelings of fullness. This multifaceted approach helps to lower blood glucose levels effectively.

Directions

The recommended starting dose of dulaglutide is 0.75 mg once weekly. Depending on individual response and tolerance, the dose may be increased to 1.5 mg once weekly. Dulaglutide is administered as a subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It can be taken with or without food. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.

Special Precautions

  • Pancreatitis Risk: There have been reports of pancreatitis associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists, including dulaglutide. Patients should be monitored for symptoms such as severe abdominal pain.
  • Renal Impairment: Use caution in patients with renal impairment; monitor kidney function regularly.
  • Thyroid Tumors: Dulaglutide has been associated with an increased risk of thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies. It is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a healthcare provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the safety of dulaglutide during these periods has not been fully established.
  • Allergic Reactions: Be aware of potential allergic reactions, including skin rashes or swelling.
