Semaglutide Oral

Semaglutide oral is commonly sold under the brand name Rybelsus.
Semaglutide is a medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which mimics the action of the incretin hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) to enhance insulin secretion, reduce glucagon levels, and slow gastric emptying. Semaglutide is available in both injectable and oral formulations. Semaglutide stimulates insulin secretion in response to elevated blood glucose levels, inhibits glucagon release, and slows gastric emptying, leading to improved glycemic control and potential weight loss.

Directions

The recommended starting dose of oral semaglutide is 3 mg once daily for the first month. After four weeks, the dose may be increased to 7 mg once daily. If additional glycemic control is needed, the dose can be further increased to 14 mg once daily. Take semaglutide orally at least 30 minutes before the first food, drink, or other medications of the day. Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of water; do not chew or crush. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.

Special Precautions

  • Pancreatitis Risk: There have been reports of pancreatitis in patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonists, including semaglutide. Patients should be monitored for symptoms such as severe abdominal pain.
  • Renal Impairment: Use caution in patients with renal impairment; monitor kidney function regularly.
  • Thyroid Tumors: Semaglutide has been associated with an increased risk of thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies. It is not recommended for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a healthcare provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the safety of semaglutide during these periods has not been fully established.
  • Allergic Reactions: Be aware of potential allergic reactions, including skin rashes or swelling.
