Alogliptin Benzoate

Alogliptin Benzoate is commonly sold under brand names such as Nesina.
Alogliptin benzoate is an oral medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the class of drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors), which help regulate blood sugar levels by enhancing the body’s natural incretin hormones. Alogliptin works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which leads to increased levels of incretin hormones. These hormones stimulate insulin secretion from the pancreas and decrease glucagon secretion, particularly after meals, thereby helping to lower blood glucose levels.

Directions

The typical recommended dose of alogliptin benzoate is 25 mg taken once daily. For patients with moderate renal impairment, the dose may be reduced to 12.5 mg once daily. Alogliptin can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is important to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.

Special Precautions

  • Pancreatitis Risk: There have been reports of pancreatitis in patients taking DPP-4 inhibitors, including alogliptin. Patients should be monitored for symptoms such as severe abdominal pain.
  • Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with renal impairment. Consult a healthcare provider for appropriate dosing.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a healthcare provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the safety of alogliptin during these periods has not been fully established.
  • Allergic Reactions: Be aware of potential allergic reactions, including skin rashes or swelling.
