Metformin
Metformin is commonly sold under brand names such as Glucophage, Fortamet, Glumetza, and Riomet.
Metformin Hydrochloride is an oral medication commonly used to manage Type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs known as biguanides, which work by improving the body’s response to insulin and decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver. Metformin helps control blood sugar levels and is often prescribed alongside diet and exercise or in combination with other medications. It can also be used to treat polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in some cases, though this is an off-label use.

Directions
Take Metformin Hydrochloride exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. It is usually taken once or twice a day with meals to reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dosage, and avoid adjusting your dose without medical advice, as this could affect blood sugar control.
Special Precautions
- Before starting Metformin, inform your doctor if you have any kidney or liver problems, as this medication may not be suitable for patients with significant organ dysfunction.
- Use caution if you have a history of alcohol use or heart disease, as these conditions may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious side effect.
- Discuss with your healthcare provider if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as Metformin may not be recommended in these cases.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking Metformin, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
Side Effects
Like all medications, Metformin can cause side effects. Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Stomach discomfort or bloating
- Metallic taste in the mouth
These symptoms usually improve over time as your body adjusts to the medication. Serious side effects are rare but may include:
- Lactic acidosis (symptoms include muscle pain, weakness, breathing difficulties, and unusual tiredness)
- Low blood sugar (especially if taken with other diabetes medications)
- Vitamin B12 deficiency (especially with long-term use)
If you experience severe or persistent symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose of Metformin, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Storage Requirements
Store Metformin at room temperature (between 68°F and 77°F or 20°C and 25°C), away from moisture and heat. Keep it in its original container, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children and pets. Do not store it in the bathroom or near sinks where moisture could affect the medication.
